Yea it's Christmas!

It's been a long year and with close to 4 weeks off I'm looking forward to the Christmas break and getting some fishing in. The weather is improving.. I got out fishing with my brother Dave yesterday at my spot. Lost a massive Kingfish!.. I'm still gutted.. the hooks pulled!. We managed to find a big school of fish on the sounder and drifted over it with Jigs landing 2 kingfish each but only 600 to 750cm in size.. but still good fun. Looking forward to some Trout Fishing at Lake Taupo.

Atomix Boat

Lake Rotoiti Rotorua
What a fantastic day at the Lake today. No wind and sunny, a good day to give fishing a miss and go swiming. Went cruising around the Lake.. had a bbq lunch and lots of swims in the hot pools and lake. Lake was only 14 deg's but jumping out of the lake front hot pools straight in the cold water was so nice.

Close Up Snapper

Wow, a year has gone by pretty quickly! One year ago today when I brought the boat. Very pleased with it and caught a few good fish from it. Put Denise off fishing though as took her out in some really rough seas. Trouble is... Monday to Friday the weather is perfect for a small boat off shore and then it blows up in the weekend. Today we went out for a spin as been a while since I have been out.... picked up a few Kawahai and then did a bit of soft baiting for Snapper landing a good pan size of 47cm.

Fishing in the Atomix 420

Another very cold day on the water with Brad today.

Drove around looking for some work-ups… but we were either too late or too early as we passed heaps on Gannets sitting on the water and no fish apart from a very quick boil-up with Brad getting a small Kahawai.

Went to my spot but there was a boat right on it! That’s the trouble with GPS’s.. someone sees you catching fish and marks it and goes back another day!

Did manage to jig a few Gurnard and some good sized Kahawai… apart from the cold was a great day out

Atomix Boat 420

What a fantastic Monday through Friday.. NO wind and flat calm seas. I think all winter so far the week days are the best for fishing!.. then comes the weekend and it starts to pack up!

Went fishing this morning. Cold as with ice all over the car. Just went Jigging only… the weather pattern changed today to East/South light winds and the schools of Kahawai were nowhere to be found!

After 37 miles from Karewa Island to Papamoa did not see one bird or school of fish. Even my never fail Phil’s spot had nothing showing on the sounder! It’s hard going jigging to nothing! At least the sea was flat BUT the lght wind was cold as! along with traveling in an open boat! Change of weather pattern put the fish down?

Phil's Spot

Great day out fishing with my Daughter Emily. We brought home 9 nice size snapper and at last the Kingfish are getting bigger here at my spot... not the 30lb i'm after but still lots of fun on light tackle. Looking forward to taking the Atomix out in winter when we get those calm still mornings... But going to be cold as with no Cabin!

Atomix Vers Lake Rotoiti

Took a break from fishing today and we all went to Lake Rotoiti. It's been a while since I was on the Lake. I use to have a Trailer Sailer and would spend lots of weekends sailing. Really nice weather today and lots of swims in the hot pools and lake. The water Temp was 19.5 so wasn't that bad.

Little Kingfish

Had a great time out at my spot with my son Brad a week ago... caught a few fish including an 8 lb Kahawai which somehow broke my light spin rod.. Pic of Brad bringing it in for me.. WOW that fish could fight! Brad caught a good 6lb kahawai and along with a small Kingfish which took my cod live bait we let them go. In the next week or two will get out to that spot with a few live baits and hope to land something bigger!

Boating on Lake Taupo in the Atomix 420

Had a fantasic time at Lake Taupo. After years of hoildaying at the Lake it was nice to be back on the water. Like most Christmas hoildays the weather was hot/cold/sunny/raining all in the one day!. Enjoyed cruising around the Lake checking out the sites.. Did a bit of fishing.. nothing BIG! but did manage to catch 3 trout (my first in Lake Taupo).
Got back to Tauranga Thursday and then Friday headed out to my spot to get some Snapper and Kingfish.. Forcast was for 15 knot winds. got out about 2 miles but with a very confused chop/swell decided to be safe and came back inside the harbour. I did manage to pick up a couple of Kahawai.. lost one at the boat!  (did not use my net). Smoked it up that night.. very nice eating.

At last I have named the boat.
2nd Chance = after having to sell my last boat 15 years ago because of injury I am now back fishing.
I was impressd with the boat at Taupo.. I had 4 adults in it and it handled it well.. BUT would only do that in calm conditions ... I have had 2 adults and 2x 11 year olds in a bit of chop/wind and handled it fine

Looking forward in the next few days to getting out to my spot and try and land a nice big Kingfish!
